REVIEW OF Explaining Reading A resource for teaching concepts, skills and strategies by Gerald G duffy , reviewed by reviewer. Gerald book showed the best way and strategy in teaching reading skill to student. The purpose of this book is translate research on explicit teaching into a resource for busy teachers who, in the hurly-burly of day-to-day classroom life, often need a quick reference for how to help readers who do not “catch on” quickly. In the chapter 1 ,that reviewer will focus , Gerald showed the stand point that teacher should motivate the student to rad first before coming to the strategy. This chapter succesful as a starting point and deliever idea that the authentic task focus on the main thing. “keeping the main thing is main thing” helps the teacher to begin teaching on track. I agree on keeping the student motivated is the most important think before teaching them the reading skill first because it’s not effective teaching reading skill if the student don’t like to read.
A Critical Review of Gerald G duffy, 2009, Explaining Reading A resource for teaching concepts, skills and strategies, Published by The Guilford Press, 72 Spring Street, New York, NY 10012 ISBN 978-1-60623-075-6 (pbk.: alk. paper) ISBN 978-1-60623-076-3 (hardcover: alk. Paper).
“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing”, so the main thing is very important as the started point. the main thing” (i.e., teaching skills and strategies “inside” motivating
reading tasks and activities). Specific ways teachers can accomplish this goal in busy classroom situations are described, and examples and reminders motivate the student is learning is the main issue. Because eventhought the student is taught to learn reading skill but they don’t bocome a reader, it means failure of the teaching. Teacher bring a big influence in giving the student what they need. Teacher must have a good plan and knowledge in keeping student motivate being a reader.
Student must provided the real reading task- so they will get what it needs to be a real readers not just an obligation reader. Two things must be considered in keeping the student motivate : first, teacher must have a vision of what the main thing is in reading; second, teacher must create tasks or
activities that give students experience doing the main thing. Real reader think reading is important when they use reading to achieve a goal important to them, to achieve a purpose of theirs, or to answer questions they want answered. they are motivated to read when reading empowers or enriches them. “Reading is power “ as gerald believe teacher believe in this trm and stdent believe it in different way that the student must be given task and activity so they will realie the power of it. as teacher could improve their way of teaching the reading skill from this. Teacher should make the student realize that reader is not only activity done only in classroom but it is more than that. Providing the real reader model of study would be best improving student’s motivation in learning rading skill.
It’s not easy to teach so many student become a real reader. However, Four conditions make it possible: being committed to a vision of the main thing, having an organizational plan, setting realistic goals, and building a literate environment. Having a vision helps us decide what reading tasks our kids should engage in—that is, tasks that will give them experience with what it means when we say “Reading is power.” The organizational plan, then, is to look for opportunities for students to experience real reading tasks. In setting realistic goals, you should as often as possible engage students in activity that gives them experience with why reading is important. 6 ways to build a literate environment : Fill the class environment with text , Organize the classroom so that students have lots of time to read, Build rich oral and written vocabulary , Make writing an integral part of the classroom context , Include multiple opportunities for students to read under your Guidance, Emphasize conversational talk in the classroom. Reviewer think one thing should be added here, being closed to the student by asking the difficulty that they received. Reviewer mean making warm situationwhere the student could enjoy the study.
In chapter 1, Gerald using an explanation provided with an example and also analogy to make the reader become more understand about the material. It analyze about how to motivate student being the good reader, and how to implement the material.
Fortunately for teacher and event teacher want to be, this material provide a good information on how to put the motivatoion on students. Methodology that been used must be nearly perfect because of the example . it shows what’s going on with the student and also providing the example on what should be done. Language choosing is not so hard , it makes easier for the reader to catch the idea .
One think is missing here about the situational of study. The nice, enjoyable and warm situation should boost the student mind to learn. The motivation could be trier also, because if they have problem it can be solved together with teacher.
Comparing with other book sources, gerald books may have the strong point and the weakness point. Reviewer look at chapter 1 of Comprehension Process Instruction Creating Reading Success in Grades K–3 , three goals are stated and in point 2 : 2. Building a learning environment that elicits students’ natural energy and inclination to explore new ideas in texts (Strand 2). The words building a learning environment could be underline because If this kind of situation is included in how motivation given it would be best as reviewer has explained before. Still reviewer see that the gerald book has a best way in teaching reading skill because it is opened with the motivation that aim in the student inner self.
As viewer think Gerald porpose a good point talking about building motivation of student to read first. As reviewer feel it is the major point before learning not only in reading skill but also in almost all skill such as listening, etc. Reviewer feel satisfy with the explanation in chapter 1 from gerald book because reviewer feel could adapted it in his daily study that reviewer will face.
